About Abandoned Brewery

An abandoned dream left for dead in a place joy forgot. Among the cobwebs and grime of an old factory in Epuni, Lower Hutt laid the remnants of a Brewery. A hapless experiment, a jumble of mismatched parts brought back to life but this time done right. Abandoned Brewery, a true micro-brewery with a never-say-die attitude.

Founder and Director Tim Ward

Since 1994, Tim has spearheaded the Wellington hospitality scene at the helm of The Hole in the Wall, Matterhorn, Good Luck Bar, San Francisco Bathhouse and Club 121 to name a few. After many years of selling other people’s beer, he always dreamt of producing his own, and for that beer to not only be of the highest quality and consistency but to also represent his own values and innate boundary-pushing character.

Head Brewer Charlotte Feehan

As a student at Vic Uni, majoring in Anthropology and Criminology and living with Garage Project just around the corner, she inadvertently fell into brewing. Working their cellar door after graduating, she progressed all the way to brewer and Certified Cicerone® at Garage. She then took her skills over the ditch and worked at Deeds, Stomping Ground and Carwyn Cellars. As the current Head Brewer of Abandoned Brewery, she uses all her skills she’s honed over the years to produce some of the finest beer in the country.

Operations Manager Tom Mahoney

The workhorse behind Abandoned Brewery. After surviving Dunedin University and emerging with a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. Tom gapped it to London to work bars and drink jars and discovered his obsessive love of all thing beer and hospitality. In 2020 covid shut down the pub he was managing and saw him pack up back to NZ. A fateful night out with Tim in Dunedin lead to him making another move up to Wellington where he’s now responsible for overseeing all things Abandoned.

Creative Director and Brand Designer Aaron McKirdy

For the last 25 years Aaron has been creating some of Aotearoa’s most recognisable brands. He’s the punk with the pencil — the psychotic genius behind the scrawling chaos of the Abandoned brand. Aaron’s been involved with Abandoned since day one when it was just an unloved pile of someone else’s broken dreams. He cut his teeth at a cluster of dirty little agencies, scooping a bunch of design awards along the way including the Best Awards Purple Pin for Public Good and Australia’s Good Design Award supreme prize “Design of the Year” — the only time this has been awarded outside Australia. What is a designer of this pedigree doing working for Abandoned Brewery? Who knows, but we’re certainly not complaining.
